Skyline view from 41st floor |
It has been many years since I went to Vegas; so when StringGirl and I had the chance to go there for our annual trade show, we had know idea where to stay. Except for the fact that we knew not to stay at the choice the engineering manager picked back in 08 (Mardi Gras, Best Western. Blech! Felt like I had to burn all my clothes after that trip to prevent bed bugs.)

naked people in the "Phantom Zone" |
Right as you enter the lobby of this one of the newer resorts on the Strip you are greeted by the striking video art installation that has one the Cosmopolitan much praise these past years. The pilasters in the lobby are all large format video walls displaying hi definition movies; alternating between decidedly steam-punk surrealist elevator scenes, apparent nude men and women reaching toward us from the "Phantom Zone" contained in the pillars, out of this world botanical prints from alien Audubon books, and giant book shelves.

larger than our flats in Zurich |
We managed to book a city view room in the West Tower. I don't know what the other rooms are like here but at least this room was spacious (900 square feet) with a generous bathroom and two queen size beds. The view of the Bellagio fountain made for great nighttime viewing of the strip out the window.

Shower dance? |
The rooms have 50 inch (maybe larger) TVs, intelligent phone systems that control the lights, TV, Radio (XM radio), and alarms. All rooms have "free" wireless (meaning you are free to buy the access). The shower had window into the room which may make one a little self conscious or might be just the thing for those wishing to have a shower show without having to venture to the more seedy of the Vegas establishments. It did however, help make the bathroom significantly brighter on those sunny Nevada mornings.

convention areas and the buffet in the distance |

AllSaints Spitalfield store on the third floor |
The second and third floor have the convention centers, shops, and restaurants. The decor on these levels are also leaning to the modernist and edgy side (the more traditional Vegas afficianados in our group were a little put off by it, but StringGirl and Amber loved the Steampunk look they sprinkled in with the very linear style of the place).

The Chandelier bar |
 |
Bond |
The resort features several bars and restaurants. Vespers, nearest the lobby and West Towers is a darkly lit lounge with comfortable chairs and sofas. From where you can see the cities hip make their way to the Marquee Club and the many restaurants upstairs. Chandelier, in the center of the building which wraps their patrons in over 2 million crystals in its multi-level seating area. and Bond, near the Western tower and entrances; featuring an LED light show that fills the air with psychedelic visions and later on at night, thumping beats and dancing girls in the elevated dance cubes suspended in the front windows.

In all, I can only say good things about the Cosmo (but maybe since my expectations were set so low by the experience at the Mardi Gras Best Western). We found out only after we arrived that the Cosmo is a Marriot partner so for those of you with a few points and Platinum status, let it be known as you will get to use the Platinum service desk, get free breakfast/brunch vouchers for the Wicked Spoon buffet and free wireless.
