Visitors to the US office from our overseas offices lately have been getting treated to one of our favorites in town; The Red Coat Tavern. Located a healthy distance from the office, the Red Coat offers one of the best burgers in town. Burgers there are 1/3-1/2 pound and served with any choices of fine toppings that you might want. My favorite is the "Brasserie Burger", Big Beef Patty (upgrade-able to Piedmont Beef), served with 2 big slabs of bacon, Swiss cheese, Brioche, water cress, and caramelized onions.

Our colleagues from Germany and Switzerland hunkered down for a real American Burger, when we brought them here. With so many options for burgers, they took my advice and the whole table ordered the Brasserie Burger. We shared a basket of fries and a basket of onion rings.
Getting a grip on the big burgers was a new experience for each of them, many of out European colleagues will eat EVERYTHING with fork and knife, so a giant two handed burger was a stretch for them.

The brasserie burger is for me the gold standard of Burgers in Detroit. I am a fan of all burgers, and there are days when I can go for a Five Guys or Smashburger, others when a Hunter House plate full of doubles are more my speed, and yet others when I need a Big Kahuna from Kona Grill (not to be confused with that new Hawaiian Burger joint that Brad and his friend "flock of seagulls" went to for their last meal). But I can ALWAYS and I mean always find the motivation for a Red Coat Tavern Burger. Sure my kids love Red Robin, and I do too, but if I have the chance and a good excuse to make work pay for it; I love the RED COAT.
The beer list is impressive looking, and funny as well. I always get a kick out of the Lawnmower beer description; "uncontaminated by flavor" HA! However, the beer list has often left me disappointed by teasing me with the possibility of trying something new, only to hear that they are out. If you boast a beer list like this you had better have the bottles stocked. It makes me miss the old days when I would drink at "Ye Olde Taproom" in Detroit, and their beer list at that time was even more dense than the Red Coats. They would buy you a beer if you found one on the list that was not in stock (though I don't know if that is their policy any more).
